Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Surgical Services Nurse Manager to lead the comprehensive operations of our Surgical Services Department in Bethel, Alaska. This critical leadership role encompasses the Operating Room, Outpatient Surgical Services, Anesthesia, and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

The Nurse Manager will be responsible for overseeing both clinical and non-clinical staff, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care, and managing departmental resources. This includes coordinating visiting specialists, developing and implementing policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a culture of safety and continuous quality improvement for a diverse patient population, including those with age-specific and cultural considerations.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, organize, and direct the daily operations and staff (clinical and non-clinical) of the Surgical Services Department, including the Operating Room, Outpatient Surgical Services, Anesthesia, and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
• Evaluate and ensure the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients.
• Coordinate visiting specialists to maintain an efficient and workable schedule in the Operating Room.
• Manage the fiscal, material, and human resources of the department.
• Participate in the development and implementation of departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
• Maintain effective interdepartmental and intradepartmental communication.
• Articulate and enforce standards for quality and safe patient care.
• Develop and implement innovative systems and processes to improve staff and patient quality and safety, demonstrating measurable results and developing action plans for improvement.
• Initiate, monitor, and enforce regulatory requirements, holding self and others accountable to policy, standards, and commitments.
• Remain current on new trends and best practices in Surgical Services and incorporate them into departmental operations.
• Ensure the development and implementation of Surgical Services initiatives to improve patient experience and family-centered care.
• Develop and implement clinical outcome measures for quality improvement, cost and complication reduction, and the implementation of evidence-based practice.
• Maintain open communication with department staff to create a Culture of Safety and engage staff in Continuous Quality Improvement.
• Interpret, implement, and monitor TJC, state, and federal regulations pertaining to department functions, ensuring departmental compliance.
• Apply age-specific considerations and cultural diversity when overseeing patient care.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of a program of education in nursing from an NLN approved institution.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an Operating Room setting.
• Minimum of two (2) years of surgical services management experience.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or Master’s degree in a healthcare or Business Administration related field.
• Certified Nursing Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
• Certified Surgical Services Manager (CSSM) certification (or ability to attain within 6 months of hire).
• Knowledge of budgets, reimbursements, coding, claims processing, and fiscal management.
• Knowledge of electronic health record systems, Cerner preferred.

Skills & Competencies

• Clinical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of AORN Guidelines and Perioperative Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, medical terminology, age-specific considerations, and cultural diversity in patient care.
• Leadership & Management: Ability to plan, coordinate, organize, and direct clinical and non-clinical staff; strong fiscal, material, and human resource management skills; experience with policy development and implementation; ability to foster a Culture of Safety and engage staff in Continuous Quality Improvement.
• Quality & Regulatory: Proven ability to articulate and enforce quality/safety standards; experience with regulatory compliance (TJC, state, federal); skilled in developing and implementing clinical outcome measures and evidence-based practice.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to effectively present information to various groups.
• Technical Proficiency: Competency with office machines (multi-line telephone, copy machine, fax machine), Microsoft Office Suite, and electronic health record systems.
• Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: Ability to solve practical problems, deal with a variety of concrete variables, and interpret complex instructions.
• Adaptability: Flexible with work schedule and capable of independent actions within prescribed limits.
• Specialized Knowledge: Knowledge of psychiatric patients (Title 47) and associated coding/billing; Non-Violent Crisis Intervention tactics.
• Mathematical Acumen: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret data.
