Job Description – Registered Nurse (RN) – Endoscopy/Gastroenterology (Endo/GI)

Facility: Strong Memorial Hospital

Position Summary:

Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join its Endoscopy/Gastroenterology (Endo/GI) department. The Endo/GI RN is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures. The RN will collaborate with gastroenterologists, anesthesia providers, technicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care throughout the pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases. Candidates must have at least two years of Endoscopy/GI experience, telemetry experience, and current BLS certification.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive pre-procedure patient assessments, including medical history, medication reconciliation, allergies, and informed consent verification.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures such as colonoscopy, upper endoscopy (EGD), ERCP, EUS, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and PEG tube placement.
  • Assist physicians during endoscopic procedures by preparing equipment, maintaining a sterile environment, and anticipating procedural needs.
  • Administer and monitor moderate sedation (if within facility policy and competency) while continuously assessing patient response.
  • Continuously monitor and interpret telemetry, cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and vital signs throughout procedures.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to complications such as bleeding, respiratory distress, cardiac arrhythmias, perforation, allergic reactions, or sedation-related emergencies.
  • Provide post-procedure recovery care, assess patient stability, manage pain and nausea, and prepare patients for discharge.
  • Educate patients and families regarding procedure preparation, post-procedure care, medications, dietary restrictions, and follow-up instructions.
  • Accurately document nursing assessments, medications, procedural events, and patient outcomes in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Collaborate with gastroenterologists, anesthesia providers, technicians, and nursing staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
  • Ensure proper handling, cleaning, and reprocessing of endoscopic equipment according to infection prevention standards and manufacturer guidelines (as applicable).
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, Joint Commission standards, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and departmental competency programs.
  • Participate in the required overnight, weekend, and holiday on-call rotation to support emergency endoscopic procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Endoscopy/Gastroenterology nursing experience.
  • Telemetry experience – Required.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with moderate sedation administration and recovery.
  • Experience in a hospital-based Endoscopy/GI procedural unit.
  • Familiarity with Epic, Cerner, or other Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.

Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday
  • 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (scheduled shifts within these hours)
  • 5 × 8-hour shifts or 4 × 10-hour shifts (40 hours/week)
  • Overnight and weekend on-call required
