Job Title: RN Surgical - First Assist

Location: Paducah, KY

Job Summary: The SURG FIRST ASSIST (RN) is responsible for providing nursing care for patient populations in the operating rooms (OR) and for perioperative care in the transition from preoperative preparation, through surgery, and to recovery areas. The SURG FIRST ASSIST (RN) must possess the skills necessary to assist the physician in a variety of surgical procedures, minimize turnaround times between procedures, and follow established safety procedures. The RN maintains and provides accurate communication during the intraoperative and perioperative periods. The SURG FIRST ASSIST (RN) uses the nursing process to include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care throughout the patient’s stay in the OR areas. The RN’s scope of practice is determined by the State Nurse Practice Act and established hospital policies.

Required Qualifications:

• Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state
• BLS certification
• ACLS certification
• First Assist RN Certification (either CNOR or RNFA)
• ADN or ASN degree
• Assists surgical team members in preparing for cases and cleaning room after procedures
• Appropriately sets up surgical cases by providing equipment and supplies based on the procedure
• Fiscally responsible for economical utilization of resources
• Performs needle and instrument counts in accordance with policy
• Re-stocks supplies in the Operating Rooms as needed
• Performs as a member of the surgical team in optimizing room turnaround time
• Demonstrates awareness of Surgical Services policies and AORN standards of care
• Organizes, prioritizes, and implements work based on the changing needs of patients and the unit
• Demonstrates principles and practices of aseptic techniques
• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical pharmacology and anesthesia agent adjuncts
• Performs treatments and administers medications per policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

• BSN degree
• 2+ years of previous nursing experience as First Assist
