ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
Position Summary
This position is responsible for functioning as both a caregiver and care manager. In the caregiver role, the RN assumes responsibility for a designated group of patients, implementing the Nursing Process. As a care manager, the RN directs and oversees the work of other caregivers through delegation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of patient care outcomes. The individual must have a comprehensive understanding of Patient Care Services and demonstrate sound judgment in decision-making as situations arise.
Essential Functions
- Perform assessment and data collection with a focus on physiological, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
- Implement care in a knowledgeable and consistent manner according to predetermined procedures, policies, and care plans.
- Identify patient and significant other learning needs, readiness for learning, and provide appropriate teaching as per policy and care plans.
- Document patient information accurately using electronic health records and adhere to regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the rights of patients and families regardless of diverse backgrounds.
- Effectively delegate patient care activities and supervise assigned coworkers.
- Utilize sound critical thinking for effective organization and priority setting.
- Follow appropriate lines of authority within the organization.
- May function as a Charge Nurse, including the delegation and reassignment of patient assignments and coordination of staff coverage.
- Engage in professional growth through seminars, workshops, and affiliations to stay current in the nursing field.
- Maintain awareness and adherence to safety requirements including infection control and proper lifting techniques.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
- Communicate courteously and efficiently with team members and support groups in alignment with organizational values.
- Exhibit professional conduct and adhere to personal appearance standards appropriate for the role.
Work Environment
This position reports to the Nursing Department Director, House Supervisor, Charge Nurse, and other designated supervisory staff. The role involves close collaboration with patients, physicians, and other clinicians to ensure optimal patient care and outcomes.
Education & Experience
- Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
- License: Current RN licensure in Washington State.
- Certification: BLS certification (Healthcare Provider) within 30 days of hire.
- Experience: Prior experience as an acute care registered nurse is preferred; minimum one year preferred for specialty nursing departments.
Skills/Competencies
- Ability to perform assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for all assigned patients.
- Strong critical thinking skills with capability for independent problem solving.
- Accountability for practicing within legal and ethical guidelines.
- Effective crisis management.
- Competency in caring for patients across the age continuum.
- Proficiency in using department-specific equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, and pushing/pulling as needed.
- Manual dexterity and the ability to lift/carry up to 30 lbs.
- Physical strength to perform CPR and handle patient movements with assistance as necessary.
- Keen mental faculties for assessment and decision-making with acutely ill patients.
- Good visual acuity for observing patient data and using documentation tools.
- Emotional stability to cope with high-stress levels associated with patient care.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Intensive Care Unit Requirements
- ACLS certification to be obtained within 6 months of hire and renewed every 2 years.
- PALS certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire and renewed every 2 years.
- TNCC certification within 12 months of hire, renewed every 4 years.
- PEARS certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire and renewed every 2 years.
- Moderate sedation training to be completed within 12 months of hire and annually thereafter
