RN – Neuro ICU | Level II Trauma
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a specialized Neuro Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) within a Level II Trauma facility. This is a high-acuity environment caring for critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.
The ideal candidate should have strong Neuro ICU experience, excellent critical-thinking skills, and the ability to manage complex neurological patients requiring advanced monitoring and interventions.

- Trauma Level: Level II
- Unit: Neuro ICU – McAuley ICU
- Beds: 20
- Charting: Cerner
- Patient Ratio: 1:1–2
- Shift: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Start: 6:45 AM / PM
- Report: Bedside report
- Scrub Color: Navy
- Undershirts: Navy, white, or black
- Scrub jackets: Optional; must be navy
Required Certifications & Experience
- BLS required
- ACLS required
- NIHSS required
- 2+ years of Neuro ICU experience preferred
- Strong critical-care experience
- Ability to interpret EKG/rhythm strips
- Experience caring for complex neurological and neurosurgical patients
Patient Population
Common diagnoses and procedures include:
- CVA / acute stroke
- Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH/ICB)
- Neuro surgeries
- Craniotomies
- Neuro-interventional radiology patients
- Ventriculostomies
- Patients requiring advanced neurological monitoring
- Frequent line insertion procedures
The facility has a strong Stroke Program and dedicated Neuro Center with a newer, state-of-the-art ICU environment.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive critical care to high-acuity Neuro ICU patients.
- Perform frequent neurological and critical-care assessments.
- Monitor and respond to changes in neurological status.
- Care for patients with ventriculostomies and complex neurological conditions.
- Manage ventilated patients and other advanced critical-care therapies.
- Interpret telemetry/EKG strips and respond appropriately to rhythm changes.
- Assist with line insertions and neuro-interventional procedures.
- Collaborate closely with intensivists, hospitalists, physicians, RT, pharmacy, and the interdisciplinary care team.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in Cerner.
Unit Support
- Charge Nurse: Available; generally does not carry a patient assignment but provides break relief.
- Safety Attendants: Available for patients requiring 1:1 observation/sitter support.
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7
- Pharmacy: 24/7
- ICU Pharmacy: Available during dayshift
- IV Team: No dedicated IV team
- Hospitalist/Intensivist: In-house
Scheduling
- Every other weekend required
- Holidays rotate with core staff.
- Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 major holidays:
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- New Year's
- Holiday time off may be considered but is not guaranteed.
- Self-scheduling is available but is subject to manager review and final approval.
- Schedules are generally released approximately 4 weeks in advance.
- Block scheduling is generally not available.
- OT and additional shifts may be available.
- Travelers can access schedules remotely, indicate availability for extra shifts, and trade shifts with other staff as permitted.
Floating
Floating may be required based on staffing and operational needs.
- Traveler may be first to float to sister facilities.
- Mid-shift floating to another facility is rare but possible.
- Travelers should be comfortable adapting to different clinical environments as needed.
Orientation
- Approximately 1–2 days of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor.
Required Pre-Contract Dysrhythmia Exam
A dysrhythmia examination through UNA is required before contract signing.
- Must be completed within 24–48 hours
- Pass/fail format
- Maximum of 2 attempts
- Minimum passing score: 80%
- Screenshot showing the number of attempts is required
- Failure of the second attempt may result in DNU status for CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento regions.
Submission Requirements
- 2 supervisory references required at submission
- 1 reference within the last 12 months
- 1 reference within the last 3 years
- Charge Nurse references are accepted
- Copy of driver's license required at submission
- Pulse profile must match the name exactly as shown on a government-issued ID; no middle name
CommonSpirit Employment Restriction
Candidates may not have been directly employed FT/PT/PRN by any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity within the previous 12 months.
Candidates who worked PRN through an outside staffing firm may be considered.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled Neuro ICU RN with strong experience caring for critically ill stroke, neuro-surgical, and neurological patients. Candidates should be comfortable with high-acuity 1:1–2 assignments, ventilated patients, ventriculostomies, EKG interpretation, and a collaborative multidisciplinary ICU environment.
