Job Title: ICU Staff Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum one (1) year of relevant nursing experience License: Registered Nurse License in good standing Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS Must-Have: - Nursing process - Nursing supervision - Patient assessment - Care planning - Patient care Description: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who uses the nursing process to provide nursing care to patients receiving therapies within the multidisciplinary activities of the ICU. The RN supervises the work assignments of the nursing assistants and is responsible to the Nurse Manager. The RN will provide professional nursing care for all patients according to the established standards and practices. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided assures the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completing the initial assessment upon patient admission and developing an appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs is crucial. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifying the plan of care is necessary based on continuous evaluation. Taking responsibility for patient and employee safety involves reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and in private is essential to resolve issues. Offering constructive feedback assists in the professional development of peers, and conferring with colleagues expands the knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking the initiative to begin appropriate solutions is important. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is expected. Department-specific job functions include ensuring good communication with patients and families by utilizing meaningful hourly rounding and bedside reports. The RN works with ventilated patients for early mobility. Collaboration with the team ensures the best outcomes for patients. Assistance with intubation, central line insertions, and arterial line insertion and care is part of the role. The RN delegates patient care tasks to assigned staff and validates the completion of these tasks. Using critical thinking to evaluate the overall patient condition and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status is essential.
