Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:2, occasionally 1:3 for overflow situations. Experience with invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring is essential. Nurses will manage ventilator support and titrate critical drips, including vasopressors and sedation medications. The age population served includes adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. There are no nurse aides on this unit; nurses take full patient loads. A charge nurse is primarily responsible without patients, while a house supervisor is available 24/7. Respiratory therapy is readily available as needed, but not stationed within the ICU. Telemetry is used on this unit, and RNs are responsible for reading strips. Nurses may take a full load of 5-6 patients when floated. Travelers float in rotation, not necessarily being the first to float. An abbreviated skills checklist is expected within 90 days from the start date.
