Description:
The Intensive Care Unit staff nurse is a Registered Nurse who uses the nursing process to provide nursing care to patients receiving therapies within the multidisciplinary activities of the ICU.
The RN supervises work assignments of the nursing assistants and is responsible to the Nurse Manager.
The RN provides professional nursing care for all patients of the unit according to established standards and practices.
Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit specific to the scope of service.
Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided.
Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs.
Implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
Modifies the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers.
Confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
Ensures good communication with patients and family by utilizing meaningful hourly rounding and bedside report.
Works with ventilated patients for early mobility.
Collaborates with the team to ensure best outcomes.
Assists with intubation, central line insertions, and arterial line insertion and care.
Delegates patient care tasks to assigned healthcare team members and validates completion of tasks.
Uses critical thinking to evaluate the overall patient condition and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status.
