Description:
The ICU consists of private beds and is staffed for low patient-to-nurse ratios.
Patient assignments typically involve one nurse to two patients, sometimes one to three for low acuity.
The unit may accommodate 15-18 patients across its entire floor.
There will be at least two ICU nurses on each shift.
Common patient diagnoses include DKA, COVID, CHF, MVA, CVA, sepsis, overdose, and general medical conditions.
There is a rare occurrence of pediatric patients, with pediatric RNs available to manage them.
If a pediatric patient is on a vent, an ICU RN will be assigned to manage them.
A minimum of one year of experience with ventilators is preferred.
Charge nurses will retain patient assignments, while supervisors are available in-house.
Respiratory therapists are not assigned full-time in the ICU but are available in-house 24/7.
Telemetry technicians assist with monitoring, though RNs must interpret their own strips.
Scheduling involves fixed shifts of 7 AM to 7 PM with some flexibility for gaps.
Weekend requirements typically involve one in three weekends, depending on staffing needs.
RNs may need to float to other units, such as PCU and occasionally MedSurg, with full patient assignments in MedSurg.
Dress code requires solid color scrubs without designs and natural hair colors.
Two days of department-specific nursing orientation will be provided along with floor shift training.
