Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: No first-time travelers Description: Unit Notes: - Unit focuses on ICU and ICU-CV Recovery. - Basic EKG interpretation test assigned during orientation. - Critical care RNs will have additional tests related to STEMI and Procedural Sedation curriculum. - Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, sepsis, AMI, ARDS, GI bleed, renal failure, CABG, TAVR, Impella, vascular surgeries, neuro surgeries, and ischemic strokes. - The unit has 24 beds with capacity up to 32 beds. - Nurse-patient ratios are 1 to 1 or 1 to 2. - An intensivist is present on the unit from 7 AM to 5 PM and on-call after hours. - Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS. - Additional certifications like IABP, CRRT, and ICP are a plus but not mandatory. - The EMR system utilized is Cerner. - Equipment includes pagers linked to the call light system and internal phones. - 2 shifts of on-unit orientation required along with floating orientation to designated towers. - No nurse aides are available on the unit. - Charge nurse role exists, but they rarely take patients. - There is a "Free Resource Nurse" who may take patients if staffing requires it. - Charge nurse responds to all rapid responses. - Breaks include ½ hour clock-out break and three 15-minute breaks per shift following CA law. - Weekend shifts consist of every other weekend or four weekend shifts in a four-week period. - Scrub color is navy blue, including any scrub jackets or undershirts. - Telemetry is monitored by 24/7 techs, but nurses must handle their own telemetry strips and reading. - Ventilation support is provided by respiratory therapy, which is available 24/7. - No dedicated IV team is present, but pharmacy operates 24/7, with a dedicated pharmacist on the unit for 12 hours M-F and six hours on weekends. - Travelers must be willing to float to other medical/surgical and telemetry units. - The cancellation policy allows for up to four shift cancellations per 13-week assignment. - Charting is done through the Cerner system.
