Registered Nurse - Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU)
Job Summary
Join a dedicated team at The Queen's Medical Center, a 575-bed private, nonprofit hospital located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. Founded in 1859, it stands as the state's major referral center for complex conditions, including Hawaii's only Level I Trauma Center, TJC Comprehensive Stroke Center, and NAEC Level IV Epilepsy Center.
The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) in the Queen Emma Tower is a specialized 14-bed unit (8 beds on QET4D, 6 beds on QET 5D) providing 24-hour neurointensivist and acute care nurse practitioner coverage. This unit is dedicated to the comprehensive care of adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients with a wide range of neurological illnesses. Common admissions include post-neurosurgical or neurointerventional procedures, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage, CNS tumors, status epilepticus, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and myasthenia gravis. The NSICU also supports overflow medical, surgical, and cardiac ICU patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the clinical care for a diverse patient population within the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.
- Integrate all healthcare providers to ensure high-quality patient and family outcomes.
- Establish and maintain a consistent and accountable relationship with patients and their families.
- Initiate and develop comprehensive plans of care tailored to individual patient needs.
- Provide thorough patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, and recovery.
- Engage in utilization management to optimize patient care resources.
- Facilitate effective discharge planning to ensure continuity of care post-hospitalization.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of twelve (12) months of recent Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Registered Nurse experience, preferably within the last three (3) years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in advanced neurological assessment and monitoring techniques.
- Experience with critical care interventions, including ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring.
- Ability to manage patients with complex neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and status epilepticus.
- Competence in administering neuro-specific medications and managing intracranial pressure.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and rapid response skills in emergent situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and patient/family education.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English effectively.
