Director of Women's & Children's Services
Position Summary
The Director of Women's & Children's Services provides 24/7 operational, clinical, and strategic leadership for Women's and Children's Services, including Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Newborn Services, and affiliated outpatient OB-GYN clinics. This leader is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based care that aligns with national standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational goals.
The Director oversees patient safety, staffing, financial performance, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, workforce development, and service line growth while fostering an environment of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Safety & Risk Management
- Lead a comprehensive perinatal patient safety program consistent with Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Safety Bundles and AWHONN standards.
- Ensure implementation of standardized clinical protocols for obstetric emergencies, including hemorrhage, hypertension, sepsis, shoulder dystocia, and maternal cardiac arrest.
- Oversee multidisciplinary simulation drills and emergency preparedness activities.
- Facilitate root cause analyses, case reviews, event investigations, and implementation of corrective action plans.
- Promote a culture of high reliability, transparency, and patient safety.
Evidence-Based Practice & Clinical Excellence
- Ensure clinical practice reflects current evidence and national professional guidelines.
- Lead the development, review, and revision of departmental policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
- Collaborate with perinatal educators to ensure ongoing staff education, competency validation, and fetal monitoring training.
- Support nursing shared governance and frontline engagement in clinical practice improvement.
- Promote evidence-based nursing practice throughout Women's and Children's Services.
Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness
- Maintain continuous compliance with:
- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
- State regulatory agencies
- Applicable accreditation and certification requirements
- Ensure continuous survey readiness through routine audits, documentation reviews, mock surveys, and policy updates.
- Oversee documentation quality, including:
- Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM)
- Obstetric triage documentation
- EMTALA stabilization requirements
- Maternal and newborn records
Operational & Administrative Leadership (24/7 Responsibility)
- Provide 24/7 operational leadership for all Women's and Children's Services.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, patient throughput, clinical operations, and escalation management.
- Coordinate operations across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, anesthesia, surgical, neonatal, pharmacy, laboratory, and ancillary departments.
- Participate in hospital administrator-on-call rotations and Incident Command during emergencies.
- Monitor operational performance and implement process improvements.
Staffing, Workforce Development & Culture
- Develop staffing plans utilizing AWHONN staffing guidelines and patient acuity.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, orientation, coaching, performance evaluations, succession planning, and employee retention initiatives.
- Foster a culture emphasizing patient safety, accountability, teamwork, diversity, and professional excellence.
- Partner with Human Resources and Nursing Education to ensure regulatory training and competency validation.
- Mentor emerging nurse leaders and clinical staff.
Quality Improvement & Data Management
- Lead maternal-child quality improvement initiatives utilizing evidence-based methodologies.
- Monitor and report key quality indicators, including:
- Severe maternal morbidity
- Cesarean birth rates
- Primary cesarean rates
- Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
- Obstetric hemorrhage outcomes
- Hypertensive disorder outcomes
- Newborn morbidity and mortality
- Breastfeeding metrics
- Patient experience scores
- Participate in state and national perinatal quality collaboratives.
- Utilize quality data to guide strategic improvement initiatives.
Budget, Resource Management & Strategic Planning
- Develop, administer, and monitor departmental operating and capital budgets.
- Ensure efficient allocation of staffing, supplies, equipment, and financial resources.
- Evaluate productivity and operational efficiency while maintaining quality outcomes.
- Lead strategic planning initiatives to support organizational growth and service line development.
- Monitor departmental performance using key performance indicators.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) license
- Demonstrated leadership experience in maternal-child health
Preferred
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), MBA, or related graduate degree
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification
- One to three years of progressive leadership experience in Women's and Children's Services
- Experience with regulatory surveys, accreditation readiness, and perinatal patient safety programs
