Ability to float to MedSurg as needed.
Description:
The women's services unit features a labor and delivery environment with a small number of labor and postpartum beds.
Labor nurses follow patients closely, providing couplet care.
C-sections are performed in a dedicated operating room, and labor nurses will act as the baby nurse only.
The unit handles an average of 200 births per year.
Patient ratios follow established guidelines of 1:1 for laboring patients and 1:3 for couplets.
There are two registered nurses on each shift.
Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and STABLE.
Common patient types involve Level 1 Client and Newborn Care, including well mothers and newborns.
Laboring patients may present for spontaneous labors, inductions of labor, and cesarean sections.
The unit also covers triage, routine non-stress tests, and inpatient/outpatient newborn hearing screenings.
RNs are expected to titrate drips, including oxytocin and magnesium.
A charge nurse is present on each shift with supervisors available most of the time.
There are resources available for assistance in reading fetal strips.
The work includes floating to other units when necessary, particularly to assist in MedSurg tasks.
The dress code requires nurses to wear clean and professional attire.
The position entails a holiday commitment based on unit needs.
Support from the MedSurg team will be available when the unit has a low census.
