Job Title: Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, AWHONN EMF Intermediate certification preferred, STABLE preferred Must-Have: Minimum of 1 year OB experience Ability to work in labor and delivery, postpartum, and as a well-baby nursery nurse Comfortable taking post-surgical patients on the OB unit Prefer some MedSurg background Description: Department: Labor and Delivery Unit size includes 6 LDRP beds. No operating rooms on the unit for C-sections. C-sections are performed in the main operating room. No triage or postpartum beds are available. Approximate births per month are 17. Approximately 220 births occur annually. Staff follow established guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios. Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN EMF Intermediate certification is preferred, STABLE certification is preferred. The common patient types include labor, delivery, postpartum, and mom/baby couplets over 34 weeks; those under 34 weeks are typically transferred out. VBACs or TOLACs are not performed on this unit. Well baby nursery can manage IV antibiotics, IV dextrose, feeders/growers, and bili babies. Nurses can take post-surgical patients from procedures such as appendectomy and cholecystectomy. The OB unit has a requirement for nurses to titrate drips. Common titratable and set rate drips include oxytocin, magnesium, and insulin. There is no charge nurse on each shift; only two nurses are staffed per shift. A house supervisor is available on-site 24/7 and is NRP trained. No nurse aids or surgical techs are present on this unit. An OB/neonatologist is in-house during the day Monday through Friday and on call after hours and on weekends/holidays. Anesthesia is in-house during the day Monday through Friday and on call after hours and on weekends/holidays. Tele/monitor techs are present; nurses are not required to read their own strips. Electronic Fetal Monitoring system utilized is OBIX. Shifts are 12 hours long, scheduled from 7 PM to 7 AM. The manager sets the schedule and will try to accommodate requests if possible. Scheduling is done approximately two months in advance. Weekend requirements are every third weekend. Holiday requirements are every third holiday. There is no call or standby requirement. Staffing may require floating to MedSurg as helping hands when OB patients are not present. Scrubs are provided. Unit-specific orientation consists of two shifts. Charting is performed using an electronic system. No BSN is required. The care setting is acute. This position is in the nursing division.
