Description:
The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for the planning and provision of nursing care to patients and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
This includes managing emergency situations and circulating for C-sections.
The nurse supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel as appropriate.
Performs physical and psychosocial assessments demonstrating knowledge and consideration of age and cultural differences.
Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan in collaboration with the healthcare team and provides care based on that plan.
Demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies including crash C-sections, precipitous deliveries, and shoulder dystocia.
Is competent to assess fetal and maternal well-being, amniotic fluid status, vaginal bleeding, and manage abnormalities.
Effectively manages pain control for laboring patients and supports/implements alternative pain control methods when appropriate.
Assists with epidural catheter placement and monitors fetal and maternal status during and after medication administration.
Educates patients and families throughout the perinatal and postpartum periods using age-appropriate and culturally sensitive methods.
Completes timely, accurate, and clear documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluations of patient responses.
Consistently performs necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
