Description:
Ratios are per ACOG guidelines.
The unit follows a 1:3 or 1:4 couplets ratio.
EMR system used is Cerner PowerChart Maternity and Cerner Fetal Links for fetal heart monitoring.
Charge Nurse responsibilities include triaging patients.
OB techs will function as aides when no cases are active.
Weekend requirement includes working every other weekend (Friday/Saturday nights, Saturday/Sunday days).
Holiday rotations occur with staff, typically one of every three major holidays.
Scrub color is ceil blue, provided by the facility.
Anesthesia is available 24/7, and typically on-site during active labor.
The majority of the population elects for epidurals.
Private OB/GYN physicians handle after-hours and weekend cases, while weekday cases are managed in their private practices.
Respiratory therapy is available 24/7.
Pharmacy services operate from 7 AM to 10:30 PM with a satellite service.
Shifts start at 7 AM or 7 PM.
Floating to postpartum is done on a rotation with permanent staff.
Floor-specific orientation includes three shifts on the unit, two in Labor & Delivery, and one in Mother/Baby.
The common patient diagnoses include those from a Level 2 NICU on-site.
The unit is staffed by experienced nurses.
Patients are typically 32 weeks and above.
Rare GYN clean patient overflow may occur.
There are lactation nurses on staff during the day who will write lactation care plans.
The unit employs an infant security system.
The patient population generally has a higher socioeconomic status with a median maternal age of 37.
There is a notable Mandarin-speaking volume, and translation services are available.
All staff assists with triaging and non-stress tests.
Call is optional, but in low census situations, staff may be placed on call for four-hour increments during shifts.
If on call, staff must be able to arrive within 20 minutes of the facility.
A sleep room is available for use during shifts.
The hospital may cancel up to four shifts during a 13-week assignment.
The charting system used is Cerner.
A BSN is not required.
