Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license eligible for practice in Pennsylvania
• At least 1 year of registered nursing experience; 2 years of bedside clinical experience preferred
• Recent medical-surgical, rehabilitation, post-acute, or comparable inpatient nursing experience preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required before the first shift
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required before the first shift
• Strong patient assessment, clinical documentation, communication, prioritization, and clinical decision-making skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams

Medical-Surgical RN Responsibilities

• Complete comprehensive nursing assessments within the required time frame and develop individualized plans of care.
• Deliver direct patient care using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Monitor patient status, recognize changes in condition, and communicate pertinent findings promptly to the appropriate care providers.
• Document assessments, interventions, patient responses, education, and care-plan updates accurately and in a timely manner.
• Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences and contribute meaningful updates regarding patient progress and ongoing needs.
• Provide patient and family education related to diagnoses, treatment plans, safety, self-care, and discharge preparation.
• Initiate discharge planning from admission and support patients in achieving appropriate rehabilitation and recovery goals.
• Delegate appropriately and provide direction, training, and supervision to ancillary nursing personnel.
• Promote safe patient handling, infection prevention, fall prevention, and a secure environment for patients and staff.
• Prioritize care effectively, manage time and resources responsibly, and contribute to a positive, team-oriented unit culture.
• Assume charge responsibilities after orientation when requested and participate in ongoing professional development.
