RN – Med-Surg Float Pool
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Med-Surg Float Pool supporting multiple inpatient units at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center (ARRMC).
This role is ideal for a flexible and adaptable Med-Surg RN who is comfortable caring for a variety of patient populations, working across different units, and adjusting to changing staffing needs.
Facility & Assignment Details
- Department: Med-Surg Float Pool – RN
- Facility: Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center (ARRMC)
- Care Setting: Acute Care
- Local Radius: 50-mile restriction; local candidates are not accepted
- Required Certification: BLS
- Charting: Epic experience preferred
- Minimum Experience: 2 years Med-Surg preferred
- Strong candidates with less than 2 years of Med-Surg experience may be considered
Float Pool Coverage
RNs may be assigned across various Med-Surg and related inpatient units, including:
- General Medicine
- Cardiology
- Medical-Surgical units
- ED boarding
- Post-Surgical units
- Orthopedic/Neuro units
- Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Behavioral Health — modified assignments
- Medical Oncology
Contract RNs will receive education during onboarding regarding the patient populations and assignments they are permitted to accept. Certain higher-complexity assignments may remain reserved for core Asante staff.
Patient Ratios
RNs will follow the staffing ratios established by the assigned unit.
Typical ratios include:
- Days: Approximately 1:4
- Nights: Approximately 1:5
- Ratios may flex up or down depending on staffing and patient acuity.
- ED Boarding: Ideally 1:4
Required Clinical Skills
Strong general Med-Surg knowledge is essential.
Candidates should be comfortable with:
- Chest tubes
- Central lines
- Heparin drips
- General medical-surgical patient care
- Post-surgical patients
- Orthopedic and neurological patients
- Cardiac/telemetry patients
- Complex medical conditions
Common Medications/Drips
- Heparin – titratable
- Amiodarone – set rate
- Cardizem – set rate
Patient Population
The float pool supports a diverse range of patients, including:
- General medical/surgical
- Orthopedic
- Neurological
- Post-surgical
- Cardiology/Heart Center
- Inpatient rehabilitation
- Modified behavioral health assignments
- Medical oncology
Note: Chemotherapy administration is not required.
Telemetry
- Telemetry is monitored centrally by dedicated telemetry technicians.
- RNs are not required to interpret their own strips, although telemetry/rhythm interpretation skills are encouraged.
Respiratory Support
- Patients may use CPAP or their home CPAP devices on Med-Surg units.
- BiPAP use on Med-Surg units is uncommon.
- RNs should be comfortable with basic troubleshooting and escalation when respiratory support concerns arise.
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurses are available on the units.
- CNA support is generally approximately 1:5–8, depending on the unit.
- CNA responsibilities vary by floor and are assigned according to patient and unit needs.
Scheduling
Asante does not accommodate scheduling requests for travelers.
- Travelers are utilized to fill staffing needs.
- No block scheduling
- Travelers must be flexible with assigned shifts.
- Weekend work is required.
- Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 winter holidays.
- Holiday scheduling is based on facility needs.
Standby / Call-Off
If the RN is not needed for a scheduled shift, they may be placed on standby and can be called in at any time during that shift.
RNs should remain flexible and available according to staffing requirements.
Unit Assignment Process
- Travelers call the staffing office at the beginning of each shift to receive their unit assignment.
- Assignments may vary based on daily census, staffing, and patient-care needs.
Orientation
- 2 × 12-hour orientation shifts
- Additional facility onboarding requirements may apply.
Orientation Hours
- First work week includes 12 hours of non-billable orientation.
- Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
Licensure
- Oregon RN license is preferred/required for standard assignment processing.
- Non-Oregon licensed RNs may be eligible for a 90-day temporary Oregon license if the permanent license is not posted before the assignment start date.
Call-Off Policy
- The facility may call off or cancel up to 24 hours during a 13-week assignment.
Dress Code
- Scrubs: Any color acceptable
- Tattoos above the shoulders must not be visible.
- Facial piercings are limited to a nose stud.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a flexible and clinically strong Med-Surg RN who can adapt quickly to different inpatient environments. Candidates with broad Med-Surg experience, strong assessment skills, and competency with chest tubes, central lines, and cardiac medications will be well suited for this float-pool role.
Flexibility with scheduling, weekend coverage, unit assignments, and standby requirements is essential.
