Med/Surg RN Job Requirements

• At least 2 years of recent medical-surgical Registered Nurse experience
• Active Registered Nurse license eligible for practice in Maine
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
• Current experience caring for patients with general medical-surgical and postoperative conditions
• Clinical proficiency with chest tubes, tracheostomies, drains, wound vacs, IVs, patient-controlled analgesia, IV antibiotics, and heparin infusions
• Previous charge nurse experience strongly preferred; nurses without charge experience may be considered if willing to receive training and serve in the charge role as needed
• Ability to work independently, adapt to changing assignments, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
• Travel nursing experience is not required; first-time travelers are encouraged to apply

Medical-Surgical RN Responsibilities

• Deliver safe, compassionate nursing care to a diverse medical-surgical patient population, including patients recovering from joint replacements, abdominal and urologic procedures, and those being treated for CHF, pneumonia, sepsis, diabetes, and co-occurring addiction-related conditions
• Manage an expected assignment of approximately 5–6 patients on day shifts and 6–7 patients on night shifts
• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, administer medications, monitor patient status, and evaluate responses to treatment
• Manage IV therapy, IV antibiotics, heparin infusions, wound vacs, drains, chest tubes, tracheostomies, PCA therapy, and other medical-surgical interventions
• Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to providers and the care team
• Collaborate with hospitalists, respiratory therapy, centralized telemetry monitoring, nursing leadership, and rapid-response support personnel
• Provide support during rapid-response events and participate in emergency interventions within the scope of practice
• Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation in Cerner
• Assist with difficult IV access after making appropriate initial attempts and following unit procedures
• Float to other departments when needed while providing care consistent with medical-surgical nursing competencies
• Serve as charge nurse when assigned or when coverage is needed after appropriate orientation and training
