Job Summary:
Medical Surgical Floor (MS) in an inpatient acute care setting. This position involves working on a fast-paced unit that handles heavy patient loads, including surgical admissions and discharges. The role requires skilled nursing care with a focus on surgical patient management, including neuro, orthopedic, and general surgical cases, with opportunities for professional development and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Job Details:

• Schedule: 12-hour shifts starting at 7:00 AM, with a minimum of 36 hours per week. Schedules are released six weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed and should be discussed with leadership.
• Required Qualifications: Valid BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications; minimum of 2 years of clinical experience within a surgical or acute care setting; EPIC electronic medical record (EMR) experience is required due to ongoing conversion; must have total joint experience, understanding of PCA pumps and reversal drugs (e.g., Narcan), and experience with TPN and Lipids.
• Preferred Qualifications: Experience with narcotic management, sepsis protocols, and titratable drips such as Heparin; familiarity with tele monitor interpretation and patient care in a high acuity environment is advantageous.
• Unit Notes: This unit cares for neuro, orthopedic, and general surgical patients, including procedures such as laminectomies, cervical fusions, and joint replacements. Typical diagnoses involve complex post-op care with use of PCA devices, epidurals, and management of chronic pain and sepsis.
• Patient Ratios and Staffing: Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6; LPNs are available, with virtual admission and discharge nurses providing additional support. Night shifts may include house supervisors; charge nurses often take smaller assignments to assist.
• Patient Care Details: May include PICC, TPN, Lipids, femoral pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, and urgent OR cases. RNs may be required to interpret telemonitor strips; tele monitors are provided by a dedicated tele monitor tech.
• Additional Notes: The unit utilizes a fast-paced, high patient turnover environment, averaging 8-12 surgery admits per day. Orientation includes a 12-hour shift focused on computer modules, general orientation, and comp review.
• Other: No call or standby requirements; floating to similar units only; scrubs are provided in black; a standard 12-hour orientation shift on the day of hire is required.
