Registered Nurse (RN) - Inpatient Med/Surg

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering patient care through a systematic nursing process that includes assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN will coordinate nursing care for patients while adhering to nursing practice standards. Collaboration with healthcare professionals is essential to ensure quality, cost-effective, and efficient care, focusing on achieving the best possible patient outcomes. The RN will serve as a resource person when necessary, applying age-specific considerations and cultural diversity in patient care. The position covers the care of patients across all age groups, including post-surgical and behavioral health patients, and involves conducting initial assessments and re-assessments every 24 hours.

Position Qualifications

• Minimum Education: Completed a program of education in nursing from an NLN-approved institution.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience preferred; new graduates are accepted depending on the specific position.

License, Certification, Registration

• Licensed in good standing as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Alaska.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Must pass and maintain competencies for this position.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is required.

Equipment/Tools

Familiarity with office equipment (computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine) and medical equipment relevant to the position is necessary.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to practice nursing according to Alaska State regulations.
• Comprehensive cognitive and technical knowledge to manage care across a continuum.
• Flexibility in work schedule and capability for independent decision-making within prescribed limits.
• Utilization of the nursing process in the provision of patient care, including administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, educating patients and families, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals.
• Experience in managing behavioral health patients and employing therapeutic communication techniques.

Required Skills

• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
• Ability to document actions involved in care delivery and to follow established guidelines and procedures.
• Effective presentation of information and responses to questions from various audiences.
• Theoretical knowledge of the nursing process, care management, and continuity of care.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in various units of measure, as well as to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability

Skill in solving practical problems and managing a variety of concrete variables, along with the capacity to interpret instructions from various formats—written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsibilities include overseeing unit secretaries and PCTs in collaboration with the Charge Nurse.

Note: Pediatric and adult experience is specifically desired.
