Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Med/Surg Registered Nurse (RN) to join a 28-bed medical/surgical unit specializing in respiratory conditions and complex respiratory care.
 

The unit cares for a diverse patient population, including patients with tracheostomies and chronic ventilator needs. This is a fast-paced environment with typical nurse-to-patient ratios ranging from 1:5 to 1:6.

Candidates with recent LTACH or specialized respiratory nursing experience are encouraged to apply.
 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to medical/surgical patients with complex respiratory conditions.
• Care for patients with tracheostomies and chronic ventilators.
• Monitor respiratory status and recognize changes requiring intervention.
• Provide tracheostomy care and ventilator-related nursing support.
• Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and nursing protocols.
• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
• Monitor vital signs, oxygenation, respiratory status, and other clinical indicators.
• Perform blood draws/phlebotomy as required.
• Document patient care accurately in the Epic EMR.
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Provide patient and family education regarding treatment and ongoing care.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient clinical environment.
• Float to other units when required and provide care within the appropriate scope of practice.
• Function effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing patient acuity.

Required Qualifications

• Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum 2 years of recent Medical/Surgical RN experience.
• Minimum 2 years of recent experience caring for tracheostomy and chronic ventilator patients.
• Strong respiratory nursing experience.
• Recent phlebotomy/blood-drawing experience.
• Current BLS certification.
• Experience working in a fast-paced acute-care environment.
• Ability to float as required.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program through ACEN or CCNE.

Preferred Experience

• LTACH experience.
• Complex respiratory care.
• Chronic ventilator management.
• Tracheostomy care.
• High-acuity Medical/Surgical nursing.
• Telemetry experience.

Patient Population

The unit provides care for patients with a variety of medical and respiratory conditions, including:

• Tracheostomy patients
• Chronic ventilator patients
• Complex respiratory conditions
• Acute and chronic medical conditions
• Patients requiring close respiratory monitoring
• High-acuity Medical/Surgical patients

Work Environment

This is a fast-paced 28-bed Med/Surg unit with nurse-to-patient ratios generally ranging from 1:5 to 1:6. Nurses must be comfortable managing multiple patients with varying levels of acuity and complex respiratory needs.

Floating is required based on operational needs.
 

Schedule Requirements

• 12-hour night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
• 36 hours per week
• Must be available to work every other weekend
• On-call availability may be required
• Block scheduling is not permitted
• Candidates must be flexible to float as needed

Time-Off Requirements

• Requested time off (RTO) must be submitted at the time of application.
• Maximum 7 days of RTO will be considered.
• No RTO will be permitted during the first two weeks of the assignment.
• Candidates requesting more than 7 days of RTO will not be considered.

Required Clinical Experience

Candidates must have the following experience clearly documented on their resume:

• Epic experience within the last 12 months
• Phlebotomy/blood-drawing experience within the last 12 months
• 2+ years of recent Med/Surg experience
• 2+ years of recent tracheostomy/chronic ventilator experience

Dress Code

Solid black scrubs are required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced Med/Surg RN with strong respiratory care expertise, particularly with tracheostomy and chronic ventilator patients. LTACH experience is highly relevant. The nurse should be comfortable with blood draws, Epic documentation, floating between units, and caring for multiple high-acuity patients in a fast-paced environment.
