Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: MedSurg/Tele Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years Med/Tele RN experience License: Current RN License Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred; Basic Cardiac Rhythm certification required Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills for a Level 1 Trauma Hospital; IV insertion and care; central line management; wound care and post-operative monitoring; cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation; care coordination with the interdisciplinary team; discharge planning and patient education, particularly on renal and fluid management. Description: RN - MedSurg/Tele position available. The facility has 637 licensed beds and holds a Level 1 Trauma Designation. It is a teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center. The unit has 23 beds with a typical census of 10-23. Patient types include those recovering from hip, knee, and shoulder replacement surgeries, bariatric surgeries, and spinal surgeries. Nursing care involves managing cardiac and insulin drips, chest tubes, wound vacs, trachs, and PCA pumps for pain control. Patients may present with acute or chronic diseases and various co-morbidities common to the med-surg population, such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances. Patient ratios are typically 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs, with 2-3 CNAs per shift. The role involves collaboration with a CNA who assists with vital signs, glucose checks, and patient care. There is also support from a receptionist/unit secretary during specified hours. Charge nurses may take on patient assignments. Phlebotomy is generally performed by nurses, although there is a designated PICC team. Resource nurses and a Hospitalist are available 24/7, along with intensivists and telemetry monitoring/tech. The EMR used is Epic, with IV pumps, medication dispensing, and monitoring systems in place. The unit is equipped with various devices, including vital sign monitors, glucose stat strips, and PCA pain management systems. Floating to other adult med-surg/telemetry units may be required. Scheduling involves a rotation of weekend shifts. Holiday coverage includes working one shift during each major holiday. Requests for time off require manager approval. Navy scrubs are designated for RNs, while LPNs wear ceil blue. The unit culture is characterized by a busy environment, with an emphasis on teamwork.
