Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Medical Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience required, first-time travelers accepted License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred, National certification in Medical-Surgical nursing preferred but not required Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and medical-surgical nursing skills for a Level 1 Trauma Hospital Experience in cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation Proficient in IV insertion and care, central line management, trach care, and chest tube management Ability to perform wound care and post-operative monitoring Capability in care coordination with interdisciplinary teams and discharge planning Description: This RN position is in a 20-bed Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit. The facility is a teaching hospital and designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center. The patient population is diverse, typically including patients who have had strokes or brain injuries, as well as those with acute or chronic diseases and post-operative care. Common co-morbidities in the med-surg population include diabetes, hypertension, infections, and congestive heart failure. Patient ratios are approximately 1 RN to 4-6 patients, with support from LPNs and CNAs. Required skills include glucometer use, insulin and heparin drips, and care for patients with electrolyte imbalances. The RN will be responsible for patient assessment and education, particularly in renal and fluid management. Support staff includes CNAs for vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, and ambulating patients. There is charge nurse support as needed, alongside 24/7 availability of respiratory therapy, hospitalists, and intensivists. The unit utilizes an electronic medical record system for documentation. Technology includes IV pumps, cardiac telemetry monitors, and portable vital sign monitors. The shift requires working 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12 on a 6-week schedule and one major holiday shift. Requests for time off will require manager approval. The unit promotes a busy yet team-oriented culture.
