Description:
The facility is a Level IV Trauma Center with 100 beds.
The unit consists of 28 beds with an average daily census of 20-22 patients.
Patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:6-7 at night, with the possibility of up to 1:8 at night.
The patient population mainly includes geriatric patients.
Common diagnoses include congestive heart failure, stroke observation, and various respiratory, kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal issues.
Skills required include NG tube placement and management, foley placement and management, chest tube management, wound care, and central line/ports/midline blood draws.
RN will be responsible for titrating drips such as Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, Lasix, and insulin.
Patient care assistants are available to assist with ambulation, activities of daily living, vitals, intake/output, and blood glucose checks.
Support within the department includes reduced patient assignments for charge RNs and 24/7 availability of respiratory therapy and hospitalists.
Technology includes EMR, IV pumps, and specific unit equipment for patient transfers.
Staff may float to other areas within the hospital where Medical Surgical patients are located.
The schedule includes weekend rotations and holiday expectations.
The work environment is supportive, with ongoing efforts to improve unit culture and engagement.
