Med Surg/Telemetry – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)

General Information

  • Unit: Med Surg/Telemetry – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
  • Beds: 48 (across two buildings)
  • Local Travelers: Accepted
  • EMR:Epic experience required (facility converting to Epic in Q2 2026)

Nurse Staffing

  • Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4–6
    • Nights: 1:5–6
  • LPNs available to assist.
  • Virtual admission and discharge nurses available.
  • Uses a Primary Care Nursing Model—candidate must be comfortable with this.

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • NIHSS

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

  • Neuro surgeries:
    • Laminectomy
    • Cervical fusion
    • LESI
  • General surgery:
    • Ostomies
    • Hernia repairs
  • Orthopedics:
    • Total hip replacements
    • Total knee replacements
  • Vascular:
    • Fem-pop bypass
    • BKA
    • AKA
  • Dialysis catheter insertions
  • PICC lines
  • TPN/Lipids
  • PCA pumps
  • Epidurals (some)
  • IV antibiotics
  • Chronic pain management (high narcotic use)
  • Sepsis
  • Urgent OR admissions
  • Dialysis unit located on the 3rd floor

Required Experience / Skills

  • Minimum 1 year RN experience
  • Surgical nursing experience required
  • Total joint experience required
  • Experience with:
    • PCA pumps
    • Narcan/reversal medications
    • Sepsis management
    • TPN/Lipids
    • Narcotic administration and monitoring

IV Drips

  • RN titrates:
    • Heparin
  • Drips titrated per protocol

Telemetry

  • Dedicated telemetry monitor technician.
  • RN responsible for interpreting telemetry strips.
  • Monitor system: Draeger

Leadership

  • Charge nurse available.
  • Charge nurse carries a lighter patient assignment.
  • Day shift charge is usually a Blessing staff nurse.
  • Night shift charge may be the House Supervisor.

Support Staff

  • CNAs available.
  • CNAs may be reassigned as sitters.
  • Greater CNA needs on night shift.

Respiratory Equipment

  • Home CPAP
  • Airvo (possible)
  • BiPAP (occasionally; patient remains on unit)
  • RT manages respiratory equipment.

Scheduling

  • Three 12-hour shifts (7:00 start)
  • Self/block scheduling not guaranteed.
  • Scheduling requests discussed with unit leader.
  • Schedule posted 6 weeks in advance.

Weekend Requirement

  • Every other weekend
    • Saturday & Sunday
    • Applies to both day and night shifts

Holiday Requirement

  • Participates in holiday rotation with core staff

Call

  • None

Floating

  • Float to like units only.
  • If floated to a higher-acuity unit, traveler functions as a helping nurse rather than taking a full patient assignment.

Orientation

  • First day:
    • 12–14 hours
    • Computer modules
    • Competencies
    • General hospital orientation
  • Unit orientation:
    • One 12-hour shift on the hired unit and shift
