The unit has a total of 26 beds with a patient ratio of 2:1. Registered Nurses provide total patient care; support staff includes unit secretaries and COVID runners. Key equipment utilized includes ventilators, Alaris IV pumps, balloon pumps, ventriculostomy drains, and glucometers. All staff employs iMobile phones and technology in their daily responsibilities. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes masks, face shields, goggles, powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR), and hoods for COVID-19 patients. Documentation is managed through an electronic system that emphasizes evidence-based clinical documentation. Nursing shifts are scheduled for twelve hours from 7 PM to 7 AM with every other weekend required. Holiday staffing is based on unit needs. Nursing staff may float to other medical-surgical units as needed, with a priority focus on intensive care units. Patient experience is enhanced through hourly rounding, bedside hand-off reporting, and completion of care boards during hand-offs. A compassionate and connected care approach is encouraged through the AIDET method. The unit is certified for excellence and is working toward a prestigious recognition. Advanced skills needed include ventilator management, critical care drip management, thorough assessments, and proficient knowledge of cardiac, neuro, and respiratory systems. Procedures performed on the unit include intubations, cardioversions, ventriculostomy drain placement and management, IABP management, continuous renal replacement therapy, and proning of patients. Dress code requires ceil blue scrubs; optional scrub jackets may be worn in white or ceil blue. Green surgical scrubs will be provided for those working with COVID-19 patients. The work environment fosters a culture of excellence, with staff members often holding national certifications and a tenured nursing workforce. Self-scheduling is available within certain guidelines, promoting work-life balance. This unit specializes in the care of ICU patients, including those diagnosed with COVID-19.
