Care involves addressing age-related physiological, emotional, and cognitive needs of patients across different age groups, including adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Job responsibilities include care planning, monitoring vital signs, administering medication dosages, understanding physiological changes, and addressing psychosocial needs. The role includes supervising and delegating care responsibilities to ancillary personnel in line with their scope of practice. Essential functions involve providing appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. The registered nurse must be competent in routine nursing skills such as medication administration, intravenous therapy including blood products, care and maintenance of indwelling catheters and drains, and safe use of medical equipment. The nurse should provide care that meets the physiological, emotional, and cognitive needs of diverse patient populations, including those with hearing, learning, and physical disabilities. Responsibilities also include initiating a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan in collaboration with healthcare team members. Competence in epidural management, care of acute post-op wounds, sterile technique, and assessment of vascular patency is necessary. Patient and family education regarding care is an essential part of the role, using appropriate teaching methods based on the patient's age, condition, culture, and readiness to learn. Delegation of patient care tasks to ancillary personnel should match individual competency and scope of practice. Evaluating the effectiveness of care performed is necessary for continuous improvement. Accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including patient responses to medications, treatments, and procedures, is required. The nurse should consistently perform necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Identifying and communicating opportunities to improve care and services is an integral responsibility. All nurses should be open to change and pursue new goals for the unit. Efficient use of downtime for job-related or unit-specific work is encouraged. Other job-related duties may be assigned as required.
