The registered nurse supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned nursing staff. The role includes coordinating care with other disciplines while utilizing critical thinking, professional and supervisory discretion, and independent judgment. Essential functions include collecting relevant data pertinent to the patients' health or situation. The nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine diagnoses and care issues. Developing a plan that prescribes interventions to attain outcomes is a crucial responsibility. The registered nurse implements the plan, coordinates care delivery, and employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment. Evaluating progress toward attaining outcomes is essential. The nurse identifies outcomes for the patient or the patient's situation. Collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare providers is key in providing care in a safe and humane environment. Providing learning opportunities for patients and their families is part of the role. Direct health information is given to patients, families, and treatment teams. Participation in discharge planning is necessary to provide continuity of care. The registered nurse delegates appropriately and coordinates duties of healthcare team members.
