Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Acute Care Med Surg Duration: 17 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Days Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years in an Acute Care Med Surg setting License: Active RN License required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Basic Med Surg skills Some cardiac skills would be beneficial Description: A strict 75-mile radius rule is enforced. The unit has a total of 14 beds. Patient-to-nurse ratios are 1:5. Staffing includes RNs and LPNs. Patients may include admission hold patients, overflow patients, and discharge pending patients. Admission hold patients are those currently in the ED with admission orders and no available medical beds. Discharge pending patients may include stretchers awaiting transport or pending discharge medication. No patients requiring IV drips such as Cardizem, amiodarone, milrinone, dobutamine, insulin, or vapothem will be accepted. Patients requiring isolation precautions and certain post-anesthesia care unit patients are also excluded. The scope of care involves medication administration both IV and PO as ordered, and attention to patients pending discharge. RNs are not required to titrate drips. Common drip treatments may include heparin and lasix on the Med Surg floor. There is a charge nurse who may also take patient assignments. The unit has 1 certified nursing assistant/registered tech. The unit may have equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow devices, but RNs will primarily troubleshoot nasal cannulas. There are no tele/monitor techs on the unit, and RNs are not required to read their own strips. Shifts are typically Monday through Friday, closing on Friday at 7 PM. The unit does not operate on weekends, and there are no holiday or on-call requirements. Potential floating may occur if the census is low, with floating to other Med Surg units. Staff will wear Caribbean blue or white scrubs as per the dress code. Typically, there are three shifts of unit-specific orientation. The surrounding area is noted for its safety, cleanliness, and availability of housing. A nearby hotel offers discounts for those on contract. Cancellation policy is set for 12 hours every two weeks. The charting system utilized in this role is MEDITECH. A BSN is not required for this position. Required certifications include BLS and NIHSS before hire.
