Job Title: Med-Surg Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical-Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours (7 PM - 7 AM) Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience required, with recent post-operative recovery experience preferred License: RN license required Certifications: BLS certification required Must-Have: Ability to work every other weekend Description: Department consists of three units with a total of 56 beds. Staff will work interchangeably between the three units. Patient to nurse ratios are 1:4-5 during days and 1:5-6 during nights. Common diagnoses include post-operative cases in general, orthopedic, and podiatry. General medical cases include diabetes, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nurses do not titrate drips. Patients may be on telemetry, which is monitored centrally by a monitor tech. Charge nurse will have patient assignments. House supervisor is available 24/7 but does not have patient assignments. Patient care assistants are present, with assignments based on acuity. The typical assignment ratio is 1:12-14, with some cross-trained in phlebotomy. Nursing assistants will be trained to respond to call lights and phones. Shifts will be scheduled based on the needs of the department. Every other weekend work is required. Holiday rotation is also required. Floating to the ICU or telemetry unit may occur to take on medical-surgical overflow. Scrubs of any professional color are acceptable. Nurses will receive department-specific orientation encompassing both HR and on-the-floor training.
