Description:
Department: Medical Surgical
The unit has 30 all private beds, with an average census of 20.
Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-6.
Common diagnoses/types of patients include dementia, post-surgical care, falls, influenza, pneumonia, failure to thrive, cancer patients, and COVID-19.
Nurses are not required to titrate drips.
Charge nurses will take patients and may work charge if they have the necessary experience.
There are 2-3 nurse aides generally assigned to the unit.
Respiratory therapy equipment, including CPAP, is available with respiratory therapists to manage.
Telemetry is available on the floor, with monitor techs reading the data.
Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours, from 7 PM to 7 AM.
There is no self-scheduling, but the schedule accommodates travelers on block scheduling as much as possible.
Weekend requirements generally include working every third weekend or more based on need, with flexibility expected.
Holiday requirements typically involve working every third holiday, and it is expected to work at least one of the winter holidays.
There is no call or standby requirement unless a shift is voluntarily canceled or requested off.
Floating to a progressive care unit is possible, taking medical surgical overflow or very low acuity patients.
Dress code allows for any solid color scrubs; patterns or designs are not permitted.
Orientation includes two days of nursing department orientation and one day on the floor.
The charting system used is EPIC.
