The nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during days and 1:5-6 during nights. Common patient diagnoses include total joint replacements, spinal surgeries, urology procedures, abdominal surgeries, bariatrics, and medical overflow cases. Experience with hemo hemovacs and JP drains is frequently required, as well as dealing with colostomies. There is no requirement for the registered nurse to titrate drips, but occasional heparin drips, PCA pumps, and TPN may be present. There is a charge nurse on each shift, though they may occasionally take a low acuity assignment during nights. Patient care technicians are on the unit, with a ratio of one technician to every twelve patients, assisting with duties. Registered nurses are expected only to troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as nasal cannulas; treatments are performed by respiratory therapists. Telemonitoring techs are available; registered nurses do not need to read their own strips. Shifts run from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730, with the manager responsible for scheduling. The rotation will not occur more than weekly, and block scheduling may be considered to meet unit needs. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend, with holiday availability as needed. Floating may be required to medical and telemetry units, which will have support staff for reading strips. Any color scrubs may be worn. A bedside shift report is expected. The unit promotes a close-knit and positive culture among staff. The radius rule for applicants is 50 miles. All requests for time off should be submitted up front. Additional requests after submissions will not be approved. The charting system used in the unit is EPIC. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not required. The trauma level for the facility is 2. The care setting is acute. Nursing division applies.
