The RN assesses patient needs and develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The RN provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates the care delivery throughout the patient’s episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist the patient and family in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization. This includes lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The RN promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening. The RN engages in social perceptiveness and analyzes data or information obtained through direct observation and assessment. The RN creates an individualized plan of care that is developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, to address the health problems identified. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response, changes in condition, or reprioritization of needs. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. The results of quality improvement activities are used to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and influence care delivery. The RN engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas for professional development. The RN takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skill. The RN demonstrates logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.
