Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 14 weeks Shift: Full-time day/night variable shift Hours per Shift: 3x12 hours scheduled as needed, including every other weekend, holiday, and 2 on-call shifts per 4-week period Experience: Two years of acute hospital experience as a Registered Nurse; one year of Emergency Department experience as a Registered Nurse License: Current Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (must be from AHA or RQI) Must-Have: Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, including one year in an Emergency Department Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN skillfully uses various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety concerns. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies initial management needs while assigning priority of care according to established triage standards. He/She establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and assesses nonverbal communication while providing frequent updates. The ED RN conducts a primary assessment of critical needs, documents major deviations from normal, and identifies necessary steps and interventions required within acceptable time frames. He/She uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. The ED RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding emergent health events. The ED RN assesses psychosocial needs and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse for all age groups. Reassessment of the patient is conducted to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition, with appropriate responses provided. The ED RN encourages mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. The ED RN makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and teaches patients what is needed for ongoing care and healing at home. He/She assesses patient and family learning styles and structures educational sessions to maximize understanding while evaluating retention of key points in discharge instructions. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services. He/She embraces the significance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed about the process of care and anticipates needs, including notifying family or support systems as necessary. He/She maintains awareness of the patient's condition and situation throughout the emergency department visit. The ED RN updates patient communication boards throughout the stay.
