It is an open book exam based on skills learned. Candidates are provided all necessary resources to pass. A passing score of 90% is required to avoid termination. All candidates must adhere to a radius rule of 50 miles. Candidates may not be employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with the system. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove artificial nails will result in termination of the contract. A driver’s license is required for submission and will be used to determine eligibility concerning the radius. The unit specializes in medical/surgical with an emphasis on post-tumor surgical intervention. Most patients are general medical/surgical but include post-surgical care. The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 1:5. RNs are required to titrate drips. Common titratable drips include heparin, lidocaine, and TPN. Charge nurse or house supervisor duties may be assigned. There may be nurse aids on this unit, with ratios sometimes dependent on sitter needs. RNs will have access to central monitoring and will interpret cardiac strips. The schedule includes three 12-hour shifts, typically from 0630-1900. Every third weekend is a requirement. Holiday requirements will rotate among staff. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating to other medical/surgical units is rare and only if necessary. Navy is the designated scrub color. Unit-specific orientation will be provided. The charting system utilized is EPIC.
