Job Summary
Join our dedicated nursing team on the 7th Floor Medical-Surgical unit at a prominent hospital in Utica, New York. This 64-bed unit specializes in providing comprehensive care for adult patients with a diverse range of medical conditions, including stroke, altered mental status, renal issues, dialysis, COPD, CHF, pneumonia, and other pulmonary challenges.
As a Registered Nurse on this unit, you will play a critical role in managing patients requiring stepdown care, particularly those recovering from stroke. You will utilize your expertise to monitor patient progress, administer treatments, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
The role involves providing direct patient care, assessing conditions, and implementing care plans in a dynamic environment that may include general medical-surgical patients alongside those requiring specialized stroke stepdown interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, assessments, and interventions for adult patients on a Medical-Surgical / Stroke Stepdown unit.
- Monitor and manage patients with complex medical conditions, including stroke, altered mental status, renal, dialysis, COPD, CHF, and pulmonary issues.
- Administer medications and treatments, including management of IV pumps, nasogastric (N/G) tubes, and feeding tubes.
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Educate patients and their families on health management and discharge planning.
- Document patient care accurately and thoroughly in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Float to other units as required by facility needs.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as an RN in a Medical-Surgical unit with Stroke Stepdown experience.
- Prior travel nursing experience.

- Proficiency in Medical-Surgical nursing practices and stroke stepdown protocols.
- Experience with common diagnoses such as stroke, altered mental status, renal failure, dialysis, COPD, CHF, pneumonia, and other pulmonary conditions.
- Competency in operating specialty equipment including IV pumps, nasogastric (N/G) tubes, and feeding tubes.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration and patient interaction.
- Proficient in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, specifically EPIC.
- Ability to adapt to changing patient needs and unit assignments, including floating.
Shift Details
- Shift Type: Night Shift (NOC)
- Hours: 6:30 PM - 7:00 AM
- Days per Week: 3 days per week
- Shift Duration: 12-hour shifts
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Start Date: October 26, 2026
- End Date: January 23, 2027
- Floating: Required to other units as needed.
- Scheduling: Block scheduling is not guaranteed.
Licensing Requirements
- Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of New York.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
