Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: Post-op care of patients Critical thinking skills Ability to ask for help when needed Good bedside manner Team player Description: The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 4-5 RNs during the day and 5-6 RNs at night. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, and overflow medical cases. Other tasks involve dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, and TPN. RNs are not required to titrate drips; only Heparin is titratable. A charge nurse is present on each shift and does not take an assignment. House supervisors are available 24/7. Patient care technicians assist with 7-10 patients during the day and 10-15 patients at night. The duties of the patient care technicians include assisting with vital signs, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy manages nebulizers while RNs manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP. Telemetry patients are monitored with Phillips monitors; RNs do not read their own strips. Shift schedules are from 0700 to 1930 for days and 1930 to 0730 for nights. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, and holiday schedules rotate every other holiday. Travelers are the first to float and will float to units with the same level of experience. RNs must take a team of 3 patients if floating from an ICU unit to a general unit. Any color scrubs are permitted. Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor, plus one 12-hour shift for system training and professional orientation.
