The unit typically has a bed capacity of 29, with a typical census of 22-26 patients and a target census of 25. Patient rooms include both private and semi-private options. Nurse-patient ratios are 4-5:1 during the day and 5-6:1 during the night. Common patient diagnoses include gastrointestinal bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, congestive heart failure, COVID-19, comfort measures, osteomyelitis, elderly patients with falls, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolisms. Staff is tasked with titrating heparin drips only. The unit has 24-hour charge nurse coverage with the expectation that the charge nurse will be free from patient assignments. A crisis RN is available 24/7, along with an administrative supervisor as a resource. Patient care technicians provide coverage with a ratio of 1:10. Patients may have oxygen requirements up to 6L nasal cannula and stable BiPAP/CPAP usage at night or as needed. Telemetry monitoring is conducted via a house-wide department, while unit equipment consists primarily of Phillips monitors. Unit clerks are available for coverage 24 hours a day. Staff is required to work 12-hour shifts, with shift report occurring at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend, with day shifts on Saturdays and Sundays and night shifts on Fridays and Saturdays. Holidays are rotated among staff. No call or standby requirements exist for this role. Travel RNs may be required to float to other medical surgical units if needed. Staff is expected to attempt intravenous starts and utilize unit resources when unsuccessful. An inpatient phlebotomy team is available for blood draws.
