Description:
The unit has 21 beds; all private except for one room that is semi-private.
Overhead lift equipment is available in all rooms.
Bedside report and 1-2 hour rounding on patients is required.
Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night.
Common diagnoses include ESRD, AKI, Hemo- and Peritoneal Dialysis patients, parathyroidectomies, ileal conduit creations, TURPs, prostatectomies, kidney stones, graft/fistula repairs, deceased and living donor kidney and pancreas transplants, and transplant biopsies.
Experience in general medicine is required; nephrology or urology background is preferred.
The RN is not required to titrate drips.
There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who typically does not take patients, but may have a small team based on staffing needs.
A house supervisor is also present 24/7.
Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:10-11 on days and 1:10-11 on nights.
Duties of PCTs include vital signs, bathing, and other activities divided among all shifts.
Respiratory therapists are available for assistance; RNs will administer inhalers.
Telemetry is monitored by technicians on another unit; RNs are not required to read or interpret telemetry information.
Shifts are scheduled as 3-12 hour shifts either days or nights with some flexibility in scheduling.
Weekend requirements include working two 12-hour shifts on weekends if preferred for day shift; night shift may involve less frequent weekend work.
Holiday requirements include working every other holiday with negotiation possible.
No call or standby shifts are required.
Floating to other general medicine units may be required but is infrequent.
Scrubs of any color are permitted; certain appearance guidelines must be followed.
Unit-specific orientation includes three days with a preceptor.
