Job Description

Job Title: Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Registered Nurse Duration: 8 Weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Hrs/Week; 5pm - 5:30am Experience: Minimum 0 years License: Current Registered Nurse (RN) License in the State of Idaho or approved compact state licensure. Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Life Support (PALS) Must-Have: Graduate of an approved School of Nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Prior Medical-Surgical experience preferred. Description: The Medical-Surgical RN provides direct patient care. This role coordinates treatment plans and ensures high-quality nursing services for patients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. It requires strong clinical judgment and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. A commitment to patient-centered care is essential. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice. The RN should demonstrate critical thinking skills in all phases of the nursing process. This role serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher, and resource for peers and other providers. Essential duties include assuring quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and measuring health outcomes. The RN must follow facility standards of care set by regulatory agencies. Knowledge and skills regarding nursing principles and practices are necessary. The RN will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in accordance with hospital policies. Nursing decisions must be made within the scope of licensure. Medications, treatments, and IV therapy must be administered as per physician orders. Monitoring vital signs, symptoms, and patient progress is required, with prompt reporting of changes. Collaboration with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals is essential to optimize patient outcomes. Educating patients and families on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and health management is a key responsibility. Maintaining accurate documentation in electronic health records (EMR) is necessary. Compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards must be ensured. Monitoring patient progress, documenting assessments, and adjusting care plans accordingly are required tasks. The RN will assist with post-operative recovery, chronic illness management, and acute care interventions. Responding to emergencies and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams is critical for optimal patient outcomes. Effective communication with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds is required. Strong organizational skills are necessary, with the ability to prioritize tasks accurately and swiftly. The RN should attend 75% of nursing staff meetings and participate in available in-service education for professional growth. Establishing a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends is essential. Promoting patient independence by establishing care goals and teaching patients and families is a key responsibility. Documenting patient care services by charting in records is required. Continuity among nursing teams must be maintained through documentation and communication of actions and needs. The RN will delegate and oversee tasks assigned to nursing assistants and unit clerks. The job description is subject to change, and other duties may be assigned as needed by the supervisor. The RN must be able to work weekends, holidays, and shift rotations as necessary. Maintaining good physical, emotional, and mental health is crucial.
