Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool
Job Summary
Join our dynamic team as a Registered Nurse in the Medical Surgical Float Pool at an acute care hospital in Hilo, Hawaii. This role offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive nursing care across various specialized units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and occasionally Cardiovascular units. You will care for a diverse patient population, utilizing your clinical expertise to manage a wide range of medical and surgical conditions.
As a float pool RN, you will adapt to different unit environments, patient populations, and team dynamics. The Medical unit has 77 beds with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6 for days/evenings and 1:8 for nights. The Surgical Acute (Laulima) unit has 18 beds with a 1:6 ratio, and the Cardiovascular unit has 15 beds with a 1:4 ratio. Unit-specific orientation will be provided to ensure a smooth transition across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct, compassionate patient care across various medical and surgical units, adapting to diverse patient populations and clinical needs.
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, and implement evidence-based nursing interventions.
- Administer medications and treatments accurately and safely, monitoring for efficacy and adverse reactions.
- Monitor and interpret patient vital signs, lab results, and diagnostic tests, escalating concerns to the medical team as appropriate.
- Manage and operate specialized medical equipment, including wound vacs and chest tubes.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care, observations, and interventions within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
- Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care strategies.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications: PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), Procedural Sedation, TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course).
Skills & Competencies
- Clinical Skills: Comprehensive patient assessment, medication administration, wound care management, chest tube management, IV insertion and maintenance, EKG interpretation, critical thinking, rapid response.
- Equipment Proficiency: Meditech EMR, Pyxis automated dispensing system, Wound Vac systems, Chest Tube drainage systems.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional adaptability, strong communication (verbal and written), effective teamwork, problem-solving, time management, ability to work autonomously and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

Licensing Requirements
