Job Summary
Join our dedicated team as a Medical Surgical Registered Nurse in Hilo, Hawaii. This contract opportunity is based in a 50-bed Medical unit, providing comprehensive care to adult patients aged 18 and over. The unit maintains a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5, ensuring focused and quality patient care.
As a vital member of our nursing staff, you will deliver high-level medical-surgical care, utilizing your expertise in a dynamic acute care setting. There is a potential for floating to Surgical Pediatrics or Transitional Care Units, requiring adaptability and a broad skill set.
This role offers an engaging assignment for a skilled RN seeking to contribute to patient well-being in a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to adult medical-surgical patients (18 years and older).
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, and implement nursing interventions.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, ensuring patient safety and adherence to protocols.
- Monitor patient progress, document observations, and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Operate and manage medical equipment relevant to patient care, including wound vacs and chest tubes.
- Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Float to Surgical Pediatrics or Transitional Care Units as needed, demonstrating adaptability to diverse patient populations.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in Medical Surgical or a higher level of acute care.
- Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Must possess an active Hawaii Registered Nurse (RN) license by the start of the assignment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, preferably Meditech.
- Experience with automated dispensing systems such as Pyxis.
- Clinical expertise in managing wound vacs, chest tubes, and other common medical-surgical equipment.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to varying shift lengths, days, and unit assignments.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic healthcare environment.
Shift Details
- Contract Length: 15 weeks
- Start Date: August 31, 2026
- Hours: Scheduled 36 hours per week following the first full week of orientation.
- Shift Type: Flexible, with availability for both Day and Night shifts (to be determined by facility needs).
- Shift Duration: Various shift lengths, typically 8-hour shifts, with flexibility required.
- Days per Week: Various days, typically 5 days per week, with flexibility required.
