Utilize the nursing process to provide direct patient care on a Neurosurgical unit, caring for patients with diagnoses including stroke, seizures, multiple sclerosis, and back, head, or spinal conditions, as well as post-neurosurgery patients.
Maintain professional accountability for the provision of patient care for assigned patients and evaluate the overall effectiveness of care delivered by other direct care givers.
Coordinate patient care activities in conjunction with other departments to ensure continuity and quality of care.
Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information in accordance with applicable standards.
Assume occasional Charge Nurse responsibilities as needed.
Float within scope as needed and participate in weekend rotation, including at least one major winter holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day).
Required Qualifications
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Minimum of 1 year of inpatient acute care experience in Medical Surgical and/or Neurology/Neurosurgical nursing.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
Willingness and ability to take on occasional Charge Nurse responsibilities.
Must be available the entire first week for orientation (night shift orients on day shift); flu vaccination or an approved exemption is required seasonally (November 1 – April 1).
Preferred Experience / Skills
Prior experience working in a dedicated Neurosurgical or Neuroscience inpatient unit.
Proficiency with EPIC electronic medical records system.
Experience with a 1:5–6 patient ratio in an acute care setting.
