Registered Nurse – Level II NICU / Special Care Nursery

Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse – Level II NICU for a travel assignment. Candidates must have recent Level II NICU experience, with a minimum of 2 years of NICU experience within the past 6 months.

The unit provides care for neonates ranging from 28 weeks gestation and above, including high-acuity respiratory cases and complex neonatal conditions. Level III NICU experience is preferred.

Required Qualifications

• BLS – Required
• NRP – Required
• STABLE certification – Preferred
• Strong neonatal assessment and critical-care skills
• Experience caring for high-acuity NICU patients

Unit Details

NICU

• 12 private NICU rooms
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1
• Provides care for infants 28 weeks gestation and above
• High-acuity neonatal population
• May occasionally operate above capacity until infants can be transferred to the newborn nursery

Special Care Nursery (SCN)

• 18 beds
• 3 pod-style rooms with approximately 6 babies per room
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 3:1
• Cares for lower-acuity neonatal diagnoses compared with the NICU

Common Patient Population & Diagnoses

NICU patients may include:

• Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)
• Meconium Aspiration
• Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)
• Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
• Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTN)
• Hyperbilirubinemia
• Sepsis
• Chorioamnionitis
• Pneumothorax
• Neonatal respiratory complications
• PICC lines
• UAC/UVC lines
• Chest tubes
• Passive cooling
• Exchange transfusions
• CPAP and advanced respiratory support

SCN patients commonly include:

• CPAP patients
• Blood transfusions
• Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)
• Lower-acuity NICU diagnoses

Surgical neonates and infants under 28 weeks are transferred to higher-level facilities such as St. Joseph or Phoenix Children's. Some cardiac patients are also transferred to Phoenix Children's.

Respiratory Support

The unit manages a wide range of neonatal respiratory conditions and equipment, including:

• Mechanical ventilators
• CPAP
• RAM cannulas
• Vapotherm high-flow nasal cannulas
• BiPAP
• V60 systems

RT coverage is available 24/7 and manages ventilators.

• Puritan Bennett 840 ventilators
• Draeger ventilators
• Vision BiPAP
• V60 systems

Clinical Support

• NNPs in-house 24/7
• Neonatologist in-house during the day
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• Tube system connecting the pharmacy with L&D, located next to the NICU
• No dedicated IV Team
• No Nurse Aides

Charge Nurse

A Charge Nurse is available and may take a patient assignment depending on census and unit needs.

Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts
• Day: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• Night: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Self-scheduling available
• Nurses submit schedule requests; scheduler reviews and balances staffing needs fairly
• Block scheduling is not routinely used but may be considered if unit needs are met
• Shift huddle begins at the scheduled shift start, followed by bedside report

Weekend Requirement

4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule

• Day shift: Saturday & Sunday considered weekend
• Night shift: Friday, Saturday & Sunday considered weekend

Holiday Requirement

Travelers participate in the permanent staff holiday rotation. Holiday groups are planned approximately 3 years in advance.

Floating

Travelers will not be floated outside of the NICU.

Orientation & Skills Validation

• 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
• Day 1 Pass/Fail Sim Lab required
• Simulation includes Foley catheter insertion
• Study guides will be provided with first-day instructions

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced Level II NICU RN who is comfortable caring for high-acuity neonates, including premature infants, respiratory-compromised newborns and patients requiring advanced respiratory support.

Level II NICU experience is mandatory. Level III NICU experience is strongly preferred.
