The unit includes a specific number of labor and delivery beds, postpartum beds, and triage areas. Expected patient demographics consist of low-risk OB patients and stable newborns. High-risk OB patients are managed by a maternal-fetal medicine specialist during pregnancy. The facility has a Level 1 perinatal/nursery designation. Nurses will adhere to AWHONN guidelines for patient ratios. Nurses are required to titrate specific drips, with heparin managed by other units. Common titratable and set-rate drips include Pitocin and Magnesium. Registered Nurses may serve as charge nurses or house supervisors. Certified nurse aides and surgical techs support the unit, especially during surgeries. An OB physician is available on-call 24/7, but neonatology coverage is provided by a pediatric physician. Respiratory equipment for newborns includes Neopuff and CPAP. Monitoring includes central fetal and newborn monitoring, with RNs reading the strips. The fetal monitoring system, along with electronic medical records, supports ongoing surveillance. Shift scheduling includes weekend and holiday rotations. Nurses may be floated to other units as needed, with specific responsibilities outlined. A dress code allows for personal scrubs, with hospital-provided scrubs required during surgeries. There is a cancellation policy in place for assignments. Charting will be conducted through an electronic medical record system.
