Shift Notes
7p-7a, weekends as needed, first to float float to ‘like’ units which are within their scope at the Boise, Meridian, and Nampa St. Luke’s campuses
Medical Surgical Oncology RN – Boise Hospital Floor 4
Unit Overview
- Department: MedSurg Oncology
- Beds: 24
- Patient Ratio: 1:3–4
- CNA Ratio: 1:8
- Charge Nurse: Present every shift; does not take patients
Patient Population
- Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
- Oncology patients
- Gynecologic Oncology (GYN ONC) surgical patients
- Hospice
- General Medical-Surgical patients
Required Experience
- BLS required
- Strongly preferred: Oncology, chemotherapy, or BMT experience
- Chemo certification required to administer chemotherapy
- Will accept:
- 1 year of oncology experience, or
- 2 years of general Med-Surg experience
- First-time travelers are welcome.
Clinical Skills
- No titratable drips
- Common drips:
- PCA (patient-controlled analgesia)
- Pain medication infusions
- Must be comfortable recognizing and responding to life-threatening telemetry rhythms
- Respiratory equipment includes:
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00–7:00 (days or nights)
- Night shifts are often grouped together when possible
- Travelers should be flexible with scheduling
- Weekend coverage required as needed
- Holiday rotation required
- No call or standby
Floating
- Travelers float first
- May float to:
- Other Med-Surg units
- Sister facilities in Meridian or Nampa
Orientation
- 2 days of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
Dress Code
- Any scrub color permitted
- No hooded sweatshirts/hoods
Unit Culture
- Teamwork is a major focus.
- The unit cares for higher-acuity patients than a typical Med-Surg floor.
- Oncology and chemotherapy experience is highly valued.
Facility Policy
- 50-mile radius rule: Travelers must live more than 50 miles from the facility to qualify.
