Job Title: Perioperative Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Perioperative Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day/Evening Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum one year acute care nursing experience required. Prior Surgical Day Care, Pre-Admission Testing, Endoscopy, or Operating Room experience preferred. License: Current Registered Nurse License required. Certifications: Current ACLS, PALS required, and IV certifications preferred. Must-Have: Proficiency in peripheral IV insertion and nursing assessment required. Description: Assess and reassess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and plans of care. Provide patient care based on standards of care, practices, protocols, and established policies and procedures. Respect each patient as an individual; provide care that fosters the patient's sense of dignity and positive self-regard. Provide patient and family teaching based on identified learning needs, readiness to learn, and barriers to learning. Collaboratively plan and prepare patients and families for discharge incorporating support systems and resources as necessary. Appropriately delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by others. Prioritize patient care, seeking assistance as needed from appropriate resources. Provide thorough, timely, and accurate documentation of all pertinent data and therapeutic interventions according to established standards. Ensure timely and thorough reports on assigned patients to other healthcare team members for continuity of patient care. Promote learning for colleagues and self by functioning as a preceptor, instructor, or trainer and attending professional development programs. Proactively identify risks to patient safety and opportunities to reduce medical and healthcare errors. Identify ethical issues in care and develop plans to address them. Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy in accordance with physician's orders, protocols, policies, and procedures. Assess patient pain levels upon admission and as necessary, utilizing the numerical pain scale. Reassess the effectiveness of pain control and notify physicians as needed, documenting assessments and patient responses to medication. Obtain supporting information and complete required documentation related to medication reconciliation. Perform pre-admission testing on Surgical Day Care patients. Assess patients undergoing day surgery, coordinating ancillary testing, and performing blood draws and EKGs. Review pre-operative orders and consult with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist to ensure appropriate tests are ordered per guidelines. Review test results, check for abnormalities, and communicate abnormalities before surgery. Verify that preoperative paperwork, such as consent forms, histories and physicals, and lab results, is present and complete. Provide emotional support to patients undergoing a change in body image or activity level due to surgery. Initiate and document post-operative phone calls to Surgical Day Care patients.
