Job Title: Surgical Assistant Profession: Nursing Specialty: RN Medical Center Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 10hr Day Shift Hours per Shift: 40 Experience: 2 years in CVOR/Surgical Assistant License: BLS Certifications: CSFA (preferred) Must-Have: Strong CVOR background is needed across all specialties. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance in cases such as CABG, TAVR, valve replacements, and robotic thoracic cases. Experience in a fast-paced environment. Description: This position is for a Surgical Assistant. The facility is a Level III Trauma Center with Magnet Designation and a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The center has a total of 938 beds. On average, there are 10 surgical cases per day. Patient types include cardiac and thoracic surgeries such as CABG, TAVR, valve replacements, lobectomies, hernia repairs, generator exchanges, lead extractions, heart transplants, and fem-pop bypass surgeries. The surgical team consists of two RNs per case: a circulator and a med RN. Travelers will be expected to circulate. The patient to nurse ratio is 1:1. Required certifications include BLS and graduation from an accredited school. A strong background in CVOR is essential. Support on the unit includes a department supervisor and manager, with a team lead available without a case assignment. Anesthesia services are available 24/7. The surgical assistant leads with instrumentation and preference cards. The charting system used is EPIC. No floating between units is allowed. There is a weekend rotation with on-call only obligations. Staff can request up to 7 days off, with additional time requiring approval. On-call responsibilities include once a month for weekends, with a 24-hour call period. Holiday expectations include being on-call as needed. The organization adheres to a fatigue policy restricting staff to a maximum of 60 hours in a week. Staff must document patient pain levels before and after medication administration. Pain levels must correspond to medication orders. Scrub colors will be provided, and there is a cafeteria and coffee shop on site for staff.
