Registered Nurse - Operating Room (OR) Job Summary

This is a 13-week contract opportunity for a dedicated Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse at a hospital in Gardner, Massachusetts. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care to surgical patients, ensuring a safe and sterile environment throughout the surgical process.

The OR RN will collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the surgical team, applying advanced clinical skills in patient assessment, intervention, and evaluation. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced surgical setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and patient care plans for surgical patients.
  • Provide patient care in accordance with established standards of care, practice, protocols, and policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, clinical coordinators, and surgical technicians to ensure optimal patient well-being during surgical interventions.
  • Maintain and oversee sterile fields, ensuring correct care, handling, and sterilization of supplies and instruments.
  • Verify patient identification, consent forms, operative procedure, and site prior to transfer to the operating room.
  • Apply principles of aseptic practice, overseeing the selection and preparation of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for all surgical cases.
  • Utilize principles of body mechanics for safe patient positioning and transfer.
  • Ensure all techniques and practices during surgical procedures adhere to perioperative practice standards.
  • Perform and maintain accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to policy, communicating results to the surgeon.
  • Identify, label, care for, and handle all specimens and cultures per established policy and procedure.
  • Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy as per physician's orders and protocols.
  • Conduct thorough and timely documentation of all pertinent data, interventions, and patient responses.
  • Provide timely and comprehensive patient reports to ensure continuity of care.
  • Educate patients and families based on identified learning needs and barriers.
  • Proactively identify risks to patient safety and contribute to error reduction initiatives.
  • Actively engage in and monitor compliance with hand hygiene practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum Work Experience: Not specified.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior Operating Room (OR) nursing experience.
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
